Why apprenticeships should be every employer’s priority

Feb 4, 2026 | News

As National Apprenticeship Week approaches, it’s the perfect moment for employers to reflect on how apprenticeships can strengthen their organisations today - and build the workforce of tomorrow.

In an economy where skills gaps continue to challenge business growth, apprenticeships offer one of the most effective, future‑focused solutions.

Recruiting an apprentice is more than bringing in extra support; it’s an investment in talent shaped around your business needs.

Apprentices learn whilst working, developing practical skills, technical knowledge, and workplace behaviours while contributing real value from day one.

For employers, this means the opportunity to nurture people who grow with the organisation, understand its culture, and evolve into highly capable long-term employees.

But apprenticeships aren’t only for new starters. Upskilling existing staff through apprenticeship pathways can transform teams, improve retention, and create clear career progression.

Industry aligned

Whether it’s developing managers through leadership programmes or supporting technical staff to achieve advanced qualifications, apprenticeships provide structured, funded training aligned to industry standards.

One of the most significant advantages for employers is the National Insurance exemption for apprentices. Under current UK rules, employers do not pay Class 1 employer NI contributions for apprentices under 25, who are undertaking an approved apprenticeship and earn below £967 per week (£50,270 annually).

This exemption applies whether the apprentice is a new recruit or an existing employee. The saving is substantial: with NI contributions typically at 13.8% (rising to 15% from April 2025), this relief can remove thousands of pounds in employment costs each year.

In a fast-changing world, the organisations that thrive are those that invest in the workforce.

Apprenticeships help create an agile, engaged workforce equipped with the skills needed for sustainable success.

As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week next week, there has never been a better time to explore how these programmes can support your strategic goals -while giving individuals life-changing opportunities to learn and grow.
